Special thanks to Congressman Joe Courtney (D-CT) for stopping by Johnson Memorial Hospital to talk with Asha Dhamija, M.D., M.P.H., CHCQM, Chief Medical Officer, about the potential impact of Medicaid cuts in the “big, beautiful bill” in advance of a final vote on the legislation. Congressman Courtney interviewed Dr. Dhamija for a post on his social media channels.

Johnson's Dr. Asha Dhamija talks with Connecticut Congressman Joe Courtney about proposed cuts to Medicaid.

Dr. Dhamija explained that nearly 30% of the patients we serve receive coverage through Medicaid and these proposed cuts would result in millions of dollars in annual losses for our regional health ministry. Dr. Dhamija also emphasized that we all benefit from Medicaid because the coverage allows patients to receive preventative care from a primary care physician in the community – an element that helps reduce avoidable use of hospital emergency departments, making it easier for others to receive the emergency care they need.

Dr. Dhamija also thanked Congressman Courtney for his opposition to the Medicaid cuts in the proposed legislation saying, “your efforts to protect patients’ access to care is how we safeguard the health of our community.”
