The cornerstone for Johnson Memorial Hospital was laid on June 17, 1911, and colleagues recently assembled to mark that special day and celebrate the occasion.
Johnson’s Lindsey Gamble, MSN, RN, Vice President of Patient Care Services & Operations/Chief Nursing Officer, addresses the gathering as Dr. Roose looks on.
Gathering in the main lobby, colleagues learned about Cyril and Julia Johnson, the founders of Johnson Memorial Hospital, and the scope of their financial commitment. Sharing a bit of hospital history, Robert Roose, M.D., M.P.H., President of Community Hospitals, quoted from a 1912 newspaper story about the grand opening of the hospital that described the facility as “a gem…. the entire arrangement is complete, and the equipment is of the very best and up to date, nothing desired being omitted.”
The newspaper account continued, “the cost of the hospital and equipment is about $75,000, and Mr. and Mrs. Johnson have endowed it with $200,000, which ensures its success from the start.” It’s interesting to note that the Johnsons’ initial $75,000 investment would be valued at almost $2.5 million today – and the $200,000 endowment would now be worth more than $6.5 million.
Dr. Roose also read part of the newspaper’s account of the dedication of Johnson: “throngs of visitors, many of whom were from out of town, were shown over the splendidly equipped institution. The corridors were equipped with beautiful cut flowers…and the private rooms were sweet with dainty blossoms sent by those furnishing the rooms.”
Following a brief speaking program, colleagues participated in a commissioning ceremony. Afterward, they gathered in the cafeteria for a barbeque where Johnson leaders served hamburgers, hot dogs, potato salad, and cold drinks.
“The celebration of Cornerstone Day gives us a chance to learn about the early days of Johnson Memorial Hospital and the tremendous commitment to the community demonstrated by its founders,” said Michael Rogers, PhD, STL, Mission Leader, Hartford and Springfield Markets. “While many things have changed over the years, that commitment has remained as Johnson’s current leaders and colleagues have reaffirmed their dedication to our patients and the local community.”
