Nurses often go above and beyond to make things a little easier for their patients and their colleagues – and Shannon Meade, RN, is no exception.

Winter chalk painting by Johnson's Shannon Meade, RN.

A nurse at Johnson Memorial Hospital, Shannon takes the time to use chalk paint to draw seasonal nature scenes and uplifting messages on a large window in the Adult Behavioral Health Unit where she works. In December, she also decorated the chalk board with holiday drawings for the children’s Christmas party.

Although Shannon has been a Johnson colleague for the past 11 years, she initially considered pursuing a career in fine arts. After noticing her artistic ability, a colleague encouraged Shannon to paint a holiday drawing on a window in the unit. According to Shannon, this small act has grown to become a team effort where colleagues help her come up with a new theme for every season. “These chalk paintings have really become a marriage of my two great loves – caring for people and using my artistic skills,” said Shannon. “The positive feedback they sometimes receive is really encouraging too.”
