Vinnie, a young Waterbury Police Officer, was diagnosed with cancer in January and is currently working through the treatment process. He has become a regular patient at Saint Mary’s Hospital’s Wound Healing Center, where the clinical team has been caring for a wound on his arm due to chemotherapy.

“They’ve been wonderful,” said Vinnie. “Every time I call or come here, they are so nice and careful. It’s been great coming here.”
On a recent visit, he brought his nurses each a gift of appreciation. The police department created t-shirts as a fundraiser for Vinnie and another member of the department who are both currently facing health challenges. In addition to raising funds, the t-shirts serve as a visible show of support.
“I really appreciate all the support from my department and people who care about me,” said Vinnie. “And I wanted to let the nurses know that they are part of my support team.”
Lisa Retallick, RN, Clinical Program Director, Wound Healing Center often cites the family atmosphere on the unit. “We see our patients weekly for several months, sometimes multiple days of the week. They become part of our family.”
